The best way to get news coverage is with a big gesture to a charity or something that benefits the community as a whole. In Toronto, when the city couldn't afford to keep a skating rink open for the winter, Master Card paid all the of the maintenance costs for the year without asking for any signage or promotion. Why not try to sell some on ebay first. Or what about creating a MySpace site. Have a look and see how other people are doing it.
You also need exposure where the people who are most likely to wear them will see them. Approach existing boutiques and ask if they will stock some of your items. They will take a cut of course, but it means that you are reaching a more retail market (people who may not go to markets and therefore most probably have more money).
