Well first with "knowing who your customers are".
Even though your prospective customers appear to be your classmates don't presume you know everything there is to know going on for them and their needs.
When I approach potential clients the first article I want to know is what it is they are doing now and how can I engineer it better for them and solve any problems they are currently having.
You might want to try a simple survey during lunch at your institution, by creating a "What Bugs You" discussion to fine tune your product solution choice.
For an example let use the "pencil". During your research and product nouns discussion one of your question could be "what bugs you something like pencils?" and you were competent to see that many of your prospective customers are have problems with "pencil tip breakage".
Your product should deliver that solution. Maybe it could be an "undemanding erase pen", what ever the product is it has to deliver what the customer desires and improve the use (benefit them) more than what they are currently using.
