Other things you can research are the use of a Blog, the search engines seem to like blogs now a days, and RSS feeds.

You don't need to use any search engine submission service. Search engines find your website automatically through the links that other websites will place to your site.
The only thing you have to do is adding good and valuable content, products and services and let the other webmasters know about your site and ask them to link to it.
You can also participate in forums, write articles and submit them to article directories and write article for weblogs and place your website link in the articles.
You don't have to be worried about search engines. They will find your website. You just need to have a good and well optimized website.

Submit to the following three search engines/directories; the cost is free to submit:
1. G00GLE
2. Yahoo
3. DMOZ (not as valuable as it use to be, but you might as well submit -it can only help)
It is true the search engines will index your site if you submit articles and create back links (which you should be doing); but submitting is free and you should also be adding a SITE MAP to your site. Sitemaps are available through G00GLE and Yahoo!
Make sure your site is NOT under construction when you submit. If you do have some links that go to a "coming soon" page, remove the link and add the link later when the page is live. And when submitting to DMOZ read the submission rules very carefully; they are picky.
