Quite a few sites (that I am not going to name) are SEO friendly.
Accessibility and standards play a major role in this. The overuse of keywords, the overuse of meta data in images, etc. will kill your ranks very fast now a days. Content is king but do NOT sacrifice content to put keywords in place of where valuable content should be for your customer(s) and prospects. This is my best advise to you.
When designing your web site and implementing everything, simply keep W3C standards and accessibility in line. Do not overdo it with FLASH or Images. Use headers properly. Use keywords in headers, title and some meta data...etc. I think you will be fine.

Whoever "blessed" is sounds like someone who didnt do his/her homework, latched onto someone who claimed he's an "SEO" and either got burned - or "Blessed" came into it with unrealistic expectations and let him/her self get burned. SEOs are real and can/do get sites ranking in search engines. It takes time to find the good ones - like any servicer: mechanic, dentist, financial adviser, etc.
