Advertising Marketing Questions and Answers

Does anyone have any idea what "gatekeeper means"-this eventually related to marketing and admin work?anyone??

Answers: A "gatekeeper" is a person who filters or blocks communications or access for another person or organization.

For example, most lawyers don't answer their own telephones, but instead have an assistant, secretary or receptionist who answers the phone and "screens" the calls. This allows the lawyer to focus all her time on clients, and not on salespeople or others who don't actually need to speak with the lawyer.

Having one or more "gatekeepers" is absolutely essential for people in certain positions. The CEO of General Motors, for example, can't talk to every consumer who's unhappy with GM's products -- if he tried, he'd never get any other work done. A TV or movie star may receive thousands of pieces of mail per day, and again can't possibly read and reply to them all.

Note that some companies don't actually hire their own "gatekeepers" but require the use of some external "gatekeeper." For example, many book publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts from authors, but may instead require that submissions come from an established agent.

The "gatekeeper" role works properly only if the gatekeeper can actually identify which communications are appropriate and which are not. All too often, however, people in the "gatekeeper" role abuse their position by imposing unreasonable conditions or restrictions.

Within the context of "marketing admininistration," most advertising agencies have "gatekeepers" who can screen prospective advertising clients and advertising-sales representatives; and most advertisers (businesses) have gatekeepers to filter out "new-business solicitation" calls from marketers and agencies.
Gatekeeper is the term for someone in a key or essential position that one must go through to get information or some task completed.
