They need to protect the interests of advertisers at adjectives cost. What are the disadvantages of a Publicist?
Answers: Publicists charge a lot of money up front for what they do and yet they make absolutely no guarantee that their efforts will actually pay off and get you the media exposure you're looking for. That's the biggest danger, IMHO.
Before my book came out I paid a publicist thousands of dollars to help publicize it. She got absolutely nothing for me in the way of exposure and it was money totally down the drain. So then I went out and did it for myself (I'd successfully gotten other authors on the bestseller list) and I didn't have a problem getting publicity. My book went on to become a business bestseller.
So, when the results are nill you wonder - are they really doing what you paid 'em to do or did they just take the money and run?

A Publicist gets you noticed by the general public.
The disadvantages are the cost of hiring one.
If you are not able to do exceptional things or willing to do trashy things then you will still be just another special human who is neither richer nor more famous.
It'd be like putting out a front page add in a big newspaper selling a pound of good coffee for the expected price. The rest of us would move on to page 2 and forget.
