By direct, I mean, establishments that are on a par with you as far as positioning, targetting customers and price points. If you offer very high end merchandise your promotional plans, spending and merchandise will reflect the consumer you are targetting, and you will need to be aware of the same activities in competitor(s) in the same grouping. An establishment that offers discounted fashions, will have a very different business and promotional plan.
