What I hear is that if your ideas/concepts are totally amazing, then it doesn't situation how they look. But you'll competing against people whose work have been importantly designed, so of course it puts you at a disadvantage. It's pious to have some primary Photoshop skills, but Photoshop isn't a miracle -- bad art direction looks discouraging no matter what program you use.
