It is affiliate cloaking - this hide the affiliate link and stops inhabitants stealing your commission. There are several ways of doing this - the easiest is to use tinyurl.
It is not better from the search engine. It is better for the query engine if you use an inbedded link. This technique you use a keyword as your linking word and then attach the correlation to the keyword via html.
G00GLE adword does not like affiliate links. Clickbank explains one approach of getting around this. A better way is to adword to your trellis site - not the affiliate link. Adword recognize many cloaking methods.
