To adjectives PICU RN's what is the biggest challange to working contained by the picu compared to full-size icu's?
I graduated within May 07 and have be working in the OR since July 07. I hold decided to switch to the Picu. What are some things that I can be prepared to promise with. Just trying to see if I am making a apposite choice. I feel aft because I only enjoy OR experience and I think I requirement this experience anywhere. People seem to have an idea that adult ICU's are a better place to work next PICU, what do u think? I approaching working with kids, even if it is a bigger stand up against.Answers: PICU is also a very provoking place to work because of the huge range to medical problems. The clients continuum from newborn to 21 years old (in oodles units). The needs, diagnosis, developmental stages and sizes are so different. A nurse requests a huge knowledge floor to succeed. The PICU is very different than grown ICU. If you have the excitement for PICU then do it. Those kids involve you
As an OR nurse, you probably don't have to business with like mad of the emotional strain that go with watching a own flesh and blood lose a loved one, and that emotional strain multiplies greatlly when you are dealing near the parents of a young child to be precise dying.
Yes, it is greatly rewarding working with kids, but the kids you will be seeing aren't going to be fun, optimistic kids, they will be very sick, contained by a lot of stomach-ache, and in some circumstances dying. It will whip a huge emotional strain on you.
In the ICU it become a little bit easier because your patients are adults, and surrounded by most cases have lived their lives.
I would perchance start out in ICU, soak surrounded by the adult critical diligence experience, and then move to PICU when you quality ready.
The first answer is great. I will freshly add that also when you are working near children, you are working with their family too - and as any parent who loves and is concerned for their child, they want THE BEST care for their child. There are abundant parents who are hyper-critical of everything that the nurses do to care for their child. They are repeatedly emotionally unstable from lack of sleep, grief, concern, etc., and it can often be firm to reason near people who are contained by such a state. Parents always devise they know what is best for their children and it is often rugged for them to give up any control and trust that you are doing your opening correctly.
I am not a PICU nurse but a good friend of mine from nursing academy is. He related a story to me once about a ancestral who was outstandingly challenging; they question every little thing, they be always raise issues with paperwork, etc., and at one point the father of the child secretly brought a video camera into the child's room to covertly cartridge the nurses working on their child, trying to catch them doing something wrong so they would own a reason to sue. Surely this is not the norm, most family are very appreciative of the prudence you give, but near are always these difficult cases that you will run into.
