I was just fired while on medical leave, is that legal?
Answers: need more information. If the employer is large enough to grant the FMLA than it is illegal to terminate you, if you are basing it on the Dr,s opinion than yes they can terminate you , not what you want to hear but legal, Dr.s notes mean nothing
Fired for being on medical leave? Probably not legal.
Laid off or down sized? Probably perfectly legal.
The answer will also depend on the number of employees the company has and what state you are in.
Medical leave won't protect you from being fired if you were fired for reasons other than the medical leave. If your position was eliminated based on changes within the company, it's legal.
However, if you were out on FMLA, you might have some protection. Did you complete the FMLA paperwork and submit that prior to going on leave?

Is it true that to become truely rich you need to own your own business a bit than work for an employer on a 9 to 5 job?If so, I am thinking of building up a net based business. However, would that show I would need to work from home adjectives the time, which would obviously how an effect on my social energy?

Easy to adjust to another trading identity .

You could set up your own business at home or have an department.
It's very rock-hard work and very stressful as the buck stops beside you all the time. The working light of day will never end when it's your own business. Don't sacrifice a domestic life for riches. Try to symmetry it well. No one ever say when they reach old-fashioned age "I wish I have spent more time at work".
Why do you say that it would affect your social time? Obviously, yes, you'll start off small and you'll work from home by yourself. But eventually, you can build the company up into something bigger, rent office, have copious people working for you, etc. My boss go into business ten years ago - just him and one other guy - and very soon he employs 120 general public to work for him.
If you do find that you get lonely, remember that the workplace is not the individual place to meet population anyway. Join a gym, take a class, volunteer at an ripened people's home ... there are plenty of ways that you can still find social interaction even if you do work alone.
