Every crime you are convicted of will be in your criminal transcription for your entire life. Depending on company policies and state law a background check may run anywhere from 5 to 50 years (The average is 7 to 10). You could look at expungement as an option which would prevent most employer from seeing your criminal record. You would requirement the assistance of an attorney and there is no guarantee, but it would be worth looking into. Even if sucessful, most elected representatives agencies get to see expunged and hermetically sealed records. Additionally, frequent businesses who provide a service in which the crime you be convicted of could directly relate to the business can see these records also (An example is that most gaming businesses can see hermetic records)
If you have a criminal conviction your best bet is to be prepared to be asked more or less it at an interview. Inform them about your bygone mistake then like lightning move into what you're doing now to build your adjectives and prevent falling into the lifestyle that led you to commit a crime.
