Wages swing, but it's become so popular, that wages are going WAY down the last couple years.
Also, it's mostly job-to-job, so nearby can be significant periods of laying-off.
Basically, an FX house get a brief to work on a movie, hires people, consequently when the work is over, lays them off.
I've hear of FX guys getting as low as $15 an hour lately, and if you think that's seriously, think again.
That's roughly what beginning front department secretaries make.
And it's expensive to live within L.A.
