I have attended one interview (Accounts) surrounded by chennai. There was two rounds within the interview. I finished the rounds successfully. At the end of the interview they asked me to dispatch the documents(certificates). I have sent the documents through communication as well as courier. Shall i ask them whether they hold selected me or not through phone?Answers: Definitely !!.
Since you own sent the documents to them, you can ask them to confirm the receipt of the documents and donate a sentence as to when the decision Will be finalized !!
It is more subtle to ask them if they hold "made a decision". Wording it that way is slightly more start on ended (and respectful...it shows them that you realise that it is their choice...they enjoy the power). Or you could word it a little differently and speak that you are following up to ask "WHEN they expect to make their final decision".

What you can do is distribute a card, with a handwritten message thank them for their time and considering you. It is proper etiquette, though rarely used any more.
It get notice, and every bit help. If you are not chosen, having sent a card, you will most predictable receive a response letting you know, that way you will not be kept waiting.
Hmm.. I reflect if you ask you will look like you are desperate, however if you don't ask you'll be going through hell until you find out. If I be in your situation, I would ask surrounded by a more indirect way resembling "Wow, that interview was really inspiring! When do you muse you will have your declaration made?"
