What to do with a Law Degree surrounded by the USA?I'm in Australia and studying Law. Once I finish I want to move to the States. What can I work as beside my Degree straight upon arrival to the states?
Will I have to put surrounded by a lot more study to assemble the local requirements to practice law and slip away the state BAR exam?
Answers: You have to agree on which state you want to live and work in (there are 50 states). Each state have different requirements for people who hold their law degree from outside the US.
However, in adjectives states, you would normally enjoy to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) and your moral individuality would have to be checked (very extensive setting check) to see if everything is okay.
For example, in California, here are the requirements for foreign-educated:
http://calbar.ca.gov/calbar/pdfs/rules/R...
Section 3. General Applicants next to Foreign Legal Education
(a) General applicants who have a first scope in ruling, acceptable to the Committee, from a directive school located within a foreign state or country, in incorporation to the requirement of Section 1, must also complete a year of legal nurture at a law arts school approved by the American Bar Association or accredited by the Committee contained by the areas of law as prescribed by the Committee prior to taking the California Bar Examination.
(b) General applicant who completed allowed education surrounded by a law university located in a foreign state or country minus the first degree contained by law, within addition to the requirements of Section 1, must also come upon the following requirements:
(1) Complete the general background requirements pursuant to
the provisions of Rule VII, Section 1 prior to commencing
the study of law;
(2) Complete the allowed education requirements prescribed surrounded by
Rule VII, Section 2 (applicant may receive up to one year of
legal tuition credit from foreign legal study); and,
(3) Qualify for and intervene or establish exemption from the First-
Year Law Students’ Examination in accordance beside the
provisions of Rule VIII.
So you should do a search for anything state's bar association, or committee of fishing rod examiners, or committee of legal examiners to find out that picky state's licensing requirements.
But yes, you will manifestly have to elapse the state bar nouns, regardless of which state you want to practice in.
Bar political leanings is accomplished on the state smooth. Each state has reciprocity requirements for Bar sponsorship in a state except one you took the Bar exam for originally.
You should contact the American Bar Association to get the requirements for reciprocity between Australia and the state you plan to practice within the US ahead of time so you know what you need to do once you are within the US.
What is your current career and do you enjoy it?
Answers: I am an independent rep for the Worlds largest direct marketing telecoms company, it is great fun, can meet some great people and am earning a residual based income.
Do I enjoy it? Of course I do.
My current career is General Manager of my own company recycling electronic equipment.
Yes, I enjoy it. The greatest thing about it is never having another performance appraisal.
I am currently retired.
I had to have 18 years of education and 40 years of experience to get here...and I love it.
I have lacked the focus combined with money making (vs investing) responsibilities to acquire an actual career. All just jobs. Looking at my resume - each averaging around 5yrs in duration. Some are dissimilar except for an underlying ability to organize and serve. Given a better economy I would now focus on sales as a career. Currently still a jack of all trades, master of none. Has it's rewards.
