You clearly have a problem beside young general public, so I would go find a errand in a company which have more older family and less younger culture.
In the company that I work, most of the employees are pretty young. The CEO is 40, most of the directors are behind time 30s, and everyone else ranges from 25-35 except for the receptionist who is 20. However, we've just have a woman start in Finance who is around 42 or 43 and whilst I don't think it's "age discrimination" exactly, she without a doubt doesn't fit into our culture. That could be your problem: remember every workplace has it's own culture and you can any fit in or you can protest it, but it's not going to correction.
I also think your attitude could be a bit of a problem. You speak that you are told what to do; yes, generally as an hand of any company your boss will tell you what to do, it's their opportunity and you are there to do what they enunciate. You sound resembling you expect for this not to apply to you because you are older. But the bottom procession is, no matter where on earth you work or what you do, if you're not the boss then someone is going to be unfolding you what to do.
Polish your resume! Many companies are looking for more mature workers as they are more stable and can usually "hit the ground running" instead of need time for a learning curve. ALWAYS hold your resume out! And keep it updated at most minuscule every 60 days - change something roughly it, like the wording, different catch-phrases, and the like. Post it on a couple of the big boards, save an eye out for likely lead, etc.
It's easier to find a better job when you're already employed (who know why...). You don't have to brand it a major undertaking, but you might be surprised and pleased at what you find out nearby. It took me a year, but by just keeping mine updated I doubled my stipend when a company called me from a posted resume, out of the blue!
Do you hold any sort of appraisal system at work? If so prepare thoroughly with some concrete planning about how your role could be enhanced ie what you want to achieve and how you will seize there. If near is no system arrange some time with your officer and explain that you're keen to hold more control over what you do. Make sure your cv is up-to-date so that you can refer to this.
I hope this works for you. How important is this opportunity for you? Could you risk changing your chore to something more suited to your skills? If so, try it. On the other hand (like various of us) you may prefer to stay in your comfort zone.
Another point to think around - and only you can want if you agree - is that many of us are contained by jobs where on earth we are not appreciated and where our talent go under-utilised. My path of dealing with that is to say to seek challenge outside the work environment, but to stay in my current available job.
