PA (Physician Assist) School interview!! HELP!?
Hello, I am a 3rd yr undergrad at UC Davis and I really want to go to PA conservatory. I have roughly speaking 300 hours of volunteer work, I've shadowed a few Physicians, have excellent grades, am within many clubs at academy, and have well-mannered letters of rec. I be told that I would probably wouldn't have the best providence getting into PA school right out of college because they want you to enjoy a paying job contained by the medical field 1st... Should I even bequeath it a chance and apply for subsequent year or take a year rotten and work as a medical assistant and then apply? Any relief on PA school would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Answers: I in recent times want to add a few comments: Try & stay away from any PA programs giving smaller quantity than a Bachelor's degree & try at adjectives cost to get into one that awards a masters. You could other try & apply straight into a PA program (you have zilch to lose at all doing this) but the prior experience is really a huge plus for you--the PA program is amazingly condensed and the more experience you have , the faster you can grasp concepts and the easier you will hold with clinicals. There is a HUGE amount to cram without trying to digit out how to take a BP for the first time resting on it, or how to operate a hospital bed! I agree that EMT may be one way to stir, although many EMTs newly function as ambulance transport these days; and paramedic training is too long to purely do for experience. Volunteering in an ER is one method to see alot of things and we tell our pre-med volunteers deeply of stuff & show them things as well. A med assistant is a pretty speedy program (and CNA) and if you excell at those, you would probably be able to get hold of a pretty advanced job beside a doc who would also be willing to demonstrate a large amount. (and the NP program that says no "prior experience" because its implied that you get all the experience within nursing getting a BSRN etc; so that's a bit of a red herring). Even becoming a phlebotomist helps you cram the ropes of the system--really any little bit you can get help!
the nursing school I go to in the inlet area also is a PA university, and they teach almost entirely entry-level PA's (without strength care experience), and even they require in the order of 1000 hours of health prudence experience, but they seem to enjoy a broad definition of what that constitutes. You'll finish the program with a master's level, and if you want to do it, go for it.
person a medical assistant will probably accomplish nothing contained by the short-term if your ultimate objective is to be a PA. (let me know, and I'll give you the university name).
**after posting this answer, I went stern to the website, and found that the nurse practitioner program doesn't require health charge experience as a prerequisite. NP's have almost very same scopes of practice (at least within California) and you could get started on your occupation sooner.
