Starting a not for profit machinery?

In Starting a nonprofit org. can i solicite donations right off the bat or do i want to start by my own funding? Secondly i'm considering this to provide home modifications to the homes of elderly and disabled individuals. After some research i found very little state and Gov relief for these people unless their indigent (poor) but theres nought (like always) for the middle class. So my interest is atleast giving partial help to the middle class but if they salary partially will this disrupt my nonprofit standings even if i dont show a profit? In other words the partial fee will go towards funding the establishment.

Could you please clarify what they'd be paying to a certain extent for?
Any type of money that's brought in, you own to disperse it by the end of the year. If you own any left over, it's a profit.
