Don't know if housing is "cheaper" in San Luis Obispo. Median house prices around here are almost $600,000. My sister pays more for her apartment within San Diego than she would for a comparable one here.
If you're into the bar scene, SLO have many honourable bars adjectives within walking distance of respectively other. Santa Barbara is about 1.5 to 2 hours, LA is 3.5, SF is 4-5.
The biggest problem is that SLO doesn't own a core industry besides government/city jobs, Cal Poly, and the Correctional services. So finding a good paying post may not be easy at adjectives. You will certainly find a broader spectrum of job in San Diego.
Unfortunatly, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo are adjectives high-cost areas to live. All three are wonderful places. I prefer San Luis Obispo as it doesn't have the jam-packed thought of bigger cities.

Housing price is cheaper in San Luis Obispo compared to San Diego. However, you should consider the relative purchasing power that respectively city has to volunteer.
