Kudos for you, if your still into horses at 17 they'll likely be a member of you life forever. Have you asked to variety payments on the horse. My sis and i bought our first horse when i was 15 and she be 17 for $50 a month for two and a half years, but it be worth it. That way they wouldn't know how to sell the horse to someone else.
As for a perfect paying job, most places have a handle on that as a student you will only beable to work faultless hours so don't worry to much in the order of that. You also have a foot surrounded by the door with volunteering, most employer see that as a good sign.
