Question:I recently applied to two tremendously different jobs and get offered both of them. First job is as a residential counselor at a private ingestion disorders clinic in an upscale district. Second job is a administration job as a project governor for a research study on substance abuse counseling at the Veteran Affaris Health Care System and Stanford Medical School.
My dilemma is this - I hold already begun training for the ingestion disorders job, which is going to provide me some direct clinical experience with material patients. It pays $14.50/hr with horrible benefits. However, I own to go from 3pm-11pm 3 times a week and from 9am to 9pm on Saturdays for a total of 36 hrs. I love this calendar because I get to sleep within...and I have insomnia, which make it hard for me to achieve good sleep as it is.
The second duty - I'll call it the research employment - pays $49,000 annualy for a 44hr week. Of course, that would be 9am to 5:30pm daily (ugghhhh). My biggest mistrust is that my insomnia will make this post hell!!

I don't think employer should look at e-mails unless something really suspicious comes up. But epmployers are looking at MYSPACE or Facebook. Employers/schools look at these places to find out more about the individual.
I don't like this, it's our space/our opinion, but some don't get the errand because of this.
As much as I despise the invasion of my personal privacy, employers enjoy the right to know what is going on during their time and with their property (i.e. the computers, bandwidth, registered software, etc.). I look at it this passageway: if you were writing surrounded by someone else's diary, they would have every right to read your writings since it's their diary within the first place!

They Should be able to look at your email, I work within IT and can look at anyones email anytime I want, but choose not to. You are using they companies email server. If you want to send personal email, attain yahoo email or dare i say Gmail, they can't look at that. Although at hand are some companies that monitor all IM's too. You are rewarded to work, not socialize and if they pay you they can see what you are working on.
They derive their right to do so from the belief that you are using company equipment on company time and they have the right to monitor the lifestyle of employees to see what impact it have on their business. Your not renting or leasing their equipment, you are paid to behave next to it in a spot on manner.

The best argument against it would be to allow privacy to body as a fringe benefit, at least until the first one get the company in hot sea for it. Monitoring such activity I can attest to at tiniest one incident that comes to mind that a worker was taking company information and using it to profit bad the side, and he was summarily dismissed for it. The company announced that such demeanour was competitve to their business.

Employers hold a right to expect a certain rank of productivity. Some may argue that there are is a indisputable level of personal privacy at work (i.e. restrooms, some personal phone calls) but Internet usage and email does not, nor should it ever leak in that category. Employer is providing the equipment (network infrastructure) to use email and the Internet. If they prefer to restrict it, they can do it within many different ways, including disabling bad network emails and access to with the sole purpose the company intranet. Monitoring is but a small step from there. It is a means of access to insure compliance. Furthermore, most companies include full disclosure of this monitoring as part of their hiring process and predictable have given up any privacy when that document get signed.
I think you should be informed at the time of hire that you will and can be monitored. But I do presume its fair for employer to be able to do this. IF you be an employer you would want to know that you are paying your employee to do their commission and not surf the internet all time. (Just like I'm doing right now) I work at a phone center and all I do is surf the internet or read and put away eat munch through. As long as the calls are answered and the customers are contented than so is the BOSS. I know my computer is being monitored thats why I hold my laptop right next to my work computer.

How would YOU feel if a court told you that you have no right to monitor what phone calls a guest within your house was making or told you that you have no right to know what someone was doing next to YOUR internet connection.

Unfortunatly, your options are predetermined. however, there are cool places to work that call for you.....maternity clothing shops (easy on stress!) or babe supply places.
