At my work, the company buys the cake and any major food themselves. (Using money surrounded by the budget) Maybe you could make cupcakes instead? Or of late go to the supermarket and buy on of those sheet cake for like 19.99. I aim hopefully they will have adequate other food to eat!
Well, I don't have a sneaking suspicion that they should be making you pay for anything- if the company desires to throw a party for the member of staff, they should cough up the money for it, not have other force pay for it. I would simplyn embargo to participate.

It would not be rude of you to ask for donations toward the cake if it's that expencive. Otherwise, I would voice go as cheap as possible. Getting forced into the most expencive item is unmerited, but it also means they're at your mercy :)

I do not think surrounded by the case of something THAT expensive it is out of queue to ask for $1-2 / person for an item that big. It is not terrifically co-worker friendly to place ALL of that burden on someone else. If 40 people are participating...surely some of them will "do the right thing".
Even if 10 pitched within $5 it wouldn't place all of the responsibility on 1 wallet.

That's what happen when you're the last one. Could you manufacture a cake or cupcakes yourself? That would be much more cost efficient for you, and you will still fulfill your responsibility to participate surrounded by the party. If it's an office surprise participant - the office should touch paying for the cake and the "big" cost items. Things like this are duty deductible. If the office won't retribution for it - then everyone should chip within for the cake- $1.00 - and then also everyone should bring a crucial side item.
