There are several issues here.'
1. If you don't have a exclusive rights (which typically costs $30-40k), your protection is minimum. But many great products are not patentable.
2. A prototype is the first of 10 steps, someone else have to put in greatly of resources to turn it into a commercial product. Many inventors underestimate this and think their prototype is all set to make money. Then here is marketing and cash outlay to clear the products.
All of the above can be measured in valid dollars. For a simple electronic product, it could mean $100k-500k.

I'm not sure why you were fired, but if they ask why you vanished the previous job, you can other say that they weren't likely to work with your arts school schedule. It may not be completely honest, but it's clearly viable given your age. Most employers will respect that as an answer.
To build light of things, you might want to acquire used to managers pissing you stale... you're in for a lifetime of it. It's kinda their undertaking. Seriously, though, you might not want to get used to jump around jobs so much. Yes, you're at the lowest rung of the totem pole and enjoy the crappy jobs right very soon, but once you learn to accord with them, you start recuperating jobs.
