It's all more or less profits--that's all ppl surrounded by this country care about--making money. Millions (if not billions) of dollars are made b/c of these different sports programs. And to reward the players for helping investors gross so much money, they too end up getting rewarded millions. So of course, children grow up thinking they don't involve an education, adjectives they need is talent. But what ppl are failing to focus about is: once you win hurt (from playing a sport), what do you have to tip out back on?

First, it is a non-compete and yes. The purpose of a non-compete is to hold that employee or contractor AFTER they hold been terminated. Most non-competes hold a specific radius around the location (i.e 30 miles) and a time frame of 1-2 years.
What state are you in? In california they are not valid. Otherwise the contract is designed for after the employee is terminated. otherwise the contract requirements to be reasonable. i.e. may be restricted in geographic band.
