If I saw clients in my cubicle/office I would want for them to be comfortable and know how to relax. Due to security risk, I would not keep hold of family pictures, but a personal touch close to a lamp, a drawing of flowers would make their stop by less stressful. If I did not see clients/customers, I would verbs the touch of a cubicle but I agree, too much is too much. It would make me have a sneaking suspicion that that the co-worker doing it was thoroughly uncomfortable individual at work.
People are way too concerned next to what others are doing. If it is not keeping that person or anyone else from doing their situation then what is the big accord?
I think it depends on the culture of the company. Some places (like the company I work for) frown on anything too customized and out of sync next to the rest of the office. But I know of some small companies where on earth things like that are driven.
That being said, nearby are plenty of high powered executives who hold personalized decor in their office including persian rugs, valuable artwork, and antique furniture. That's more of an ego piece, to show off how much money/power they hold. If you're the CEO of the company, I think it's practically expected for you to buy your own (overpriced) touches.
