As a former event planner myself, I can give some practical advice.
You COULD bear classes, but what will be much more valuable is real-life experience. You involve to get hired by someone who is already doing what you want to be doing. I would recommend Walt Disney World or Disneyland. They are constantly looking for conventions/special events sale managers (which is their permanent status for "event planner"). What's really cool about working for Disney is that you don't enjoy to go out and find your own clients...you capture leads from those that call Disney wanting to enjoy their event there.
Once you've gain some experience with Disney, you might agree on to go bad on your own, or you might decide you want to try to finance within the company.
There are also several other companies that do this, but I'm biased towards Disney because that's the career walkway I chose.

I a moment ago went through a similar situation, give my supervisor the resignation letter ending week.
Keep it short and simple. "Thank you for having me as part of the pack of your team" that kinda thing. I don't guess you need to administer a reason for disappearing. You can go through reason during the exit interview (assuming your company has one). The notification is gonna be on file, you don't want to write something that could be misinterpreted contained by the future.
