My friend Connor works as a ref for highschool soccer games, it pays 8 dollars and hour (about six hours a daytime, four days a week.) and he says it's super simple. I am amazed at the number of people who are beneath the misapprehension that it is unlawful for an employer to give a 'bad' mention - I meet loads of them within my job as a career adviser.
1.) It is not unlawful for an employer to provide a bad citation.
2.) It is not unlawful for an employer to refuse to bestow a reference.
The canon would require that your employer be truthful and give an honest representation of you. So, as Curious explains above, whether a suggestion is 'good' or 'bad' is a matter of subjectivity - it depends on your dictation. Your employer would be breaking the law if they give a false poor reference - although how you'd find out going on for it I don't know, as references are not covered by the Freedom of Information Act.
You should simply explain to your employer that you are seeking another work and ask who you should put down as a reference. They won't embargo and if you are a good member of staff, they might even try to keep you by offering you more money. If they ask why you are disappearing - be truthful, say you wallow in the work and the company but have found you entail a job beside more money.

Sorry, it sounds like you're doing everything right. There isn't a piercing/tattooing apprenticeship as such as here is not a recognised qualification. The way to start is by finding work as a trainee next to an established practitioner.
It may be worth ringing studios to see if there is work going (most will ballyhoo with a sign within the window). Another way is ask for their proposal on how to get started? Do they know of anyone who may be looking to nick on a trainee?
Or, as a first step, you could ask if you could spend a day at hand to gain experience (on a voluntary basis) to help you to agree on if it is right for you? Could be a way of getting your 'foot contained by the door' or at least getting hold of experience whilst you carry on looking.
