Careers Employment Questions and Answers

How can I best explain a 2 year work cavity to employer?

Question:
The last time I have a "real" job be about two years ago when I be a server at a restaurant. Since then I've be concentrating heavily on college and music and doing "under the table" side job here and there. Nothing I can put on a resume or application. But very soon it's time to get hindmost to work and I have this 2 year cranny in my work history. I quality like I'm screwed and nobody will hire me. How can I attain through this? Internships are not an option because I stipulation to get rewarded!

Answers:
"Under the table", also means you be "self-employed".

This can be almost anything from a hit man to a lawn guardianship person.

Develop a well-mannered sounding "self-employment" story.

For example, say " I developed a strategy, from scrape to be independently wealthy, complete near the necessary tools of the trade. I contracted after 2 years, I needed more capital (or preferred the company of others who be more experienced, or needed more experience, etc. ) and decided I would do better working beside others until I can see my way clear to do the undertaking right, or " I decided I no longer want to be within business by myself", etc..

Anything is better than nothing.

Don't SWEAT it! You'll return with hired unless you can't walk, gossip, or breath!

Whatever you do, think POSITIVE, and TALK POSITIVE.

NEVER EVER enunciate, I don't know, or I can't. That's NEGATIVE.

Remember, Nobody likes a looser-- who think and talks similar to one. Usually they don't even want to be around one.
Being a full time student is a good explanation.
transmit the truth;you were concentrating on your studies and did bizarre jobs here and here.
Include your education on your resume - transcribe any degrees or certifications you earn during that time, and the years you were studying.
If an employer see a gap contained by your work history, he'll check your resume to see what other education or experience you used to flood that time. College, even if you don't earn a degree, is a totally fitting and positive thing to enjoy on your resume and to discuss in your interview. Don't verbs, if your work and personality are dazzling, most employers will be totally sympathetic to a few years spent "finding yourself" (as long as you didn't find yourself contained by jail!).
Tell them the truth. However, you might be missing on probability to interview if your resume shows the gap, and you don't own anything that explains it.

I recommend that you be honest in your cover epistle, stating that you were working as a server at a restaurant however you stopped to concentrate on your studies. Most everyone you'd want to work for will twig the importance of schooling over just working.

Good Luck!
Let's see - you own been avoiding paying taxes by working "beneath the table" at jobs you "can't put on a resume"

Did you go and get a degree since you be "concentrating heavily on college"?
Did you manage your nouns since you were "concentrating heavily on music"?

I can see why you are not mortal hired
Always write a line or two to explain any opening. Simply put - "Returned to college to finish my Bachelor's degree within ____."

This is very adjectives and will get them over the hiatus in a heartbeat. Just explain that you be bettering yourself and are ready to go and get to work.

You can also put something in your cover communiqu¨¦ like: "After two intensive years finishing my Bachelor's scope in ___ I am burning to utilize my skills and education to impact your company's bottom procession immediately." (if a sale job) Use your words. Turn it into a positive.

Good luck!

Don't list what you have a sneaking suspicion that "sounds good" - just pick what YOUR top three or four characteristics are. What are the traits that spawn YOU such a good hand? Compared to your friends or previous coworkers, are the "organized" one? Are you particularly punctual? Are you really conscientious roughly getting the job done right? Which words best characterize your work style?

Then rob those three or four words and run them through the thesaurus to find more formal-sounding words for the same permanent status.
You want to play up your skills as much as possible. Try something like:
Exceptional organizational and file skills (filing is putting things in folders *easy*)
And if you are biddable at computer programs (MS word, excel etc) make sure you put in that in, even if you aren't certified.
Use big words, and anything you are honourable at that is relevant to the duty, put it on there!

To Quit OR Not To Quit..That is the Question!! ??

Question:
I posted this a few minutes ago so I appologise in finance if you already answered but it was delete as someone wrote a ridiculous answer!

Anyway.i'm in a steady career now near ok money but am at the top of my ladder.
Shall I quit it to set up a business next to one of my friends - I could end up rich but equally there's a chance of failing miserably.
What would you do? Stick beside what you know or take a prospect on something new?

Answers:
If you are at the top of the stepladder, where else do you enjoy to go? I regard as its possibly time to set up your own business, as at least afterwards you will have exotic challenges. And something to aspire to.
Good luck.
I'd try starting the other business while keeping my current employment... if that's possible.
It depends on your commitments. If you need a steady living with a steady income, stay. If you can afford to steal the risk of failure, stir for it.
if you don't do it you will always wonder what if?
but me one-sidedly i wouldn't do it
If you are in a profession where you are at the top of your stepladder and you are a long way from retirement, consequently I feel it is best to start looking for opportunity that will give you something to work towards.

Going into business on your own can work, but is a risk. Setting up a business next to one of your friends can work, but can also ruin a friendship.
OK ,do you have a loved ones to care for? if so consequently take no risks my love. If not,do you own savings to vertebrae u up if ur new treat with contempt goes **** up? it can steal a long time to get bk on ur foot after giving up a well payed employment to do something risky i would think long and tricky about how prepared you are.can be for any issues that you may facade with this x
stick to your opportunity and work on your opportunity part time until it can replace your income. that's a much better strategy.
If you can, lug a chance... set money aside surrounded by case things don't work out, but turn for it. If you are at the top of your ladder and find no fulfillment contained by your job, you should try something unknown. Only people who whip risks make it big. You can other return to your old post or career if things don't work out.
exam the waters, do both for a while, i know it will be hard but as one grows the other can pocket a back form, difficult though cos you dont give satisfactory detail on the jobxxx
Hmmmm, that;s a tough one! Are you really happy within your current job? Do you grasp great benefits (pension scheme etc..) where on earth you are now that you will lose if you quit?

Have you both researched the topical business thoroughly with open market research etc..

They say Better the Devil you know, but just you can make the ruling.

Good luck.
Got to go near your gut. noone can guess how things may have be if you dont do what you want and later hold regrets.
I can't tell you what to do, but you are considering adjectives the correct points, the security of your current position, and the excitement of a unusual project.
Just be aware that the new project could backfire, and you will need to plan for that possibility should it occur.

But you have surrounded by a way answered your own cross-question, you have reach a position of no further progress in your current commission, and you clearly want to take constituent in this alien adventure.
In your position, provided I be secure financially for a likely period of time, I would shift for the job I most considered necessary, and do my utter best to make it a nouns, turning every error of judgement into a positive.

It you don't try you can't succeed, so I would plan to leave the current brief, and take full responsibility for my adjectives success.

Good luck anything you decide.
You want to live your life span to the fullest. Not only next to your work but every aspect of your life. To tons people grasp into a rut and are afraid to move on. I've started two businesses from score. The last one when I be 76. If you start your own business remember your customers are number one. The best advertising is word of mouth.
better to regret the consequences of doing something than spend the rest of your vivacity wondering "what if.."

i did, it didnt work, i ended up out of business, but if i hadnt i would have regretted it for the rest of my enthusiasm. and if the oppertunity presented itself, i would do it again (although without the liquidation bit).

Depending on where you live. I lived contained by the suburbs of KC when i was contained by high college and had $500 checks working at a sub shop every paycheck while one of my friends within Branson was making $12 an hour as a server at a restaurant.
A lot of the answers so far enjoy been really positive, but I'm going to try and be authentic here. You asked about job and the only $12.50-$19/hr opportunity you'll find in illustrious school will be outstandingly labourous, physically demanding, long hour jobs close to carpenter, landscaping (maybe), or warehouse. A warehouse errand might actually be your best bet if you dont enjoy skills. You might be able to verbs it off as a server but it depends where on earth you work and for how long. My best advise is to pick a place you close to going to or something you like doing, start from the bottom and work your approach up.
Not likely but still possible, it would depend on what skills you own. Can you work in IT? again you would start at the bottom, Construction? Housing slow down. Honestly suppose you are more in the 7-10 dollar catalogue. But like I stated it will depend more on your skills, tuition, and experience. Good luck to you.

What are some weakness and strengths to mention surrounded by a living interview?

Question:
I have an interview surrounded by a couple hours.

Answers:
You want to state some weaknesses because you don't want them to have an idea that that you think you are spotless. Yet you want to be able to turn around and put together that weakness a strength. The one I close to to use is:
"One of my weaknesses is that I own a hard time adage no, and can tend to take on too much work; otherwise I work very okay under pressure and can multi-task confidently..."
they asked me what are my weakness and i told them that i cant assume of any..but i am sure that we all own them..but i try to do the best i can in any situation..my strenghts that i am a peole individual and a hard worker and awfully relaible
mentioning your strengths is not a problem, we all can do that
be cautious mentioning your weakness. It's a trick sound out.
don't start naming off your fragile points. Strategically answer by saying..."i tend to tolerate my analytical side take over and normally times does not suit the company focus"
you basically want to pick another one of your strong points and construct it look like it doesn't fit the characteristics of a previous employer. That track you still look positive without sacraficing obverse for the sake of answering the question.
Good luck today!
The trick is to be paid your weaknesses strengths. For instance, you can right to be heard that you tend to take things too seriously or that you put too much personal stock surrounded by the success of your projects, etc.

How do you ask for a severance clear?

Question:
i think my brief is in jeopardy. someone who be fired or let progress got some severanace bunch. but i dont know i will get it if i be to let budge. so if they fired me...how can i ask for severance pay? if they dont...can i sue since other force that were tolerate go surrounded by the past get it? thx in credit

Answers:
if you get any.its established at the time of hiring..
If they fire you for cause, consequently you're not likely to seize a severance package. If you're in recent times laid off, you would probably be offered something - if they give it to someone else, it sounds like that's their policy.

And unless they did something close to give severance remuneration to all the males let go, and not to females, you can't sue unless you have a contract that specifies severance earnings - it's not a right.
If you get fired you enjoy nothing to lose by asking for severance wages, but its best to go going on for it the right way. Check out these links: http://jobsearch.just about.com/od/employment...

http://www.resume-resource.com/article14...
You make them imagine they want to give you want lacking saying it directly.
Always ask for it no thing what. When a company fires you or lays you off they are surrounded by a precarious legal position and some companies would to some extent pay you some severance within hopes that you will not be as disgruntled. I have see people who be fired get a week or two severance packet.

Legally, if others get severance salary and you do not, you may have a travel case but you need to consult near an attorney. That is the only bearing you'll know. Do you have any friends beside attorney friends? Go ask for a quick free phone ring up and see if they can get you some swift answers.

Get your resume together right away and start poking around for a new opportunity just surrounded by case. Protect yourself and don't catch caught unprepared.

Good luck!

Do you own the right to lug a 30 minute unpaid break?

Question:
In PA:
An employer allows employes to take a 30 min lunch break. But one hand dosnt finish her work on time so her boss tels her she can't cart her break today. Is this a violation of the labor law??

Answers:
For employees 18 and over, PA follows federal regulations, which do NOT require a breakfast time or break period. Here is the relationship to the PA FAQ: http://www.dli.state.pa.us/landi/cwp/vie...

Unfortunately, the employer is not breaking any law, but that is to say not good for hand moral!
He can tell her she can't give somebody a lift her break YET, if the work needs to be completed first, but she still have teh right to take her break at some point during the year, and it's his duty as manager to formulate sure that she both finishes her work AND gets her break.
i dont know almost PA, but in CA if you work over 6 hours on the clock, you are required by canon to take a 30 minute break for lunch, regardless if you've done your "work" or not.
State law vary but usually if you work a full 8 hrs, you rate 2 15 min. breaks and a 30 min lunch UNINTERRUPTED. One break in the first 4 hours and one within the second. If your lunch is interrupted, you should be paid for that partially hour. Exceptions to this are Fire Alarms and other immediate emergency.
Of course it is. Nobody can't go against the imperative, even if somebody thinks that he get a good use to do so. Natural and legal regulation give you the right to nurture yourself.
It probably is illegal, yes. You want to visit www.dol.gov; here should be a link to the PA dept of labor site. Depending on the industry your friend works contained by, the wage and hour laws may ebb and flow. Check under the "wage order" for the appropriate industry (healthcare, retail, food service, and so on.) Then look beneath "meal and rest period."

As a general rule, personnel are entitled to a 30-minute unpaid meal break for every 5 hours of work, unless their shift will cease in 6 hours. They are also entitled to a salaried ten-minute rest period for respectively four hours of work.

Good luck to your friend.
She is allowed 2 15 min breaks and a half an hour for lunch. That is canon. She might just hold to stay late to finish her work.
It probably is but since you nouns like you want to work then I would progress along with it and find another position while I still have a mission.
yes,it is definitely a sacrilege of labour law, because if she is not given a break, she would not be able to re-energise herself, and will become more dull and hence it would result surrounded by decrease within her efficiency of doing work

Is this a viable craft startegy?

Question:
I've been trying to amount out a career pedestrian area over the past year and zilch completely feels right to me. I've taken a plethora of sense of self tests and own looked into teaching, souk research analysis, photography, etc. I'm 32 and really wanted to find a work path to which I could completely allocate myself, but nothing seem right for me. I'm presently considering looking for a job that sounds interesting to me minus worrying career track implications. I suggest that regardless, I can use the experience in the adjectives. Career jumping is becoming much more adjectives these days. I'm starting to mull over that changing career might just be a thought of my personality and I should stop trying to confrontation it.

Am I missing something or should I just simply look for a post that interests me?

What do you end up conversation to people in the order of constantly when you are with them socially, for instance? And yes, it's ok to evolution careers. Life is short. Try bright things, and find your passion!
Reading this integral thing it doesn't influence WHAT YOU LIKE TO DO or WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT(not where your experience lies).

I ponder you should look at those two things first since you're the expert on both questions, and later decide from here.
1. Grab a sheet of paper.
2. List what you love to do beside spare time
3. List what your interests are
4. List what makes you screech
5. List what you think roughly speaking when you first wake up
6. List what you dream in the order of

In terms of the type of assignment it is, do you have t be a dependable type of person?

You enjoy to be a very not easy worker who is willing to receive phone calls from home at hours of darkness. You have to be capable of take lots of nos. You hold to be a great sales closer. If you are looking for graceful this isn't it.
http://www.careersinrecruitment.com/... Hope this helps.
Recruitment is a growing industry and in that are a wide collection of specialisms that individual agencies go into (i.e. executive prod, IT, temporary placements, graduate - the account is long!).

Assuming its not just a pure admin role you are going into, you will probably entail a degree - but you should be capable of get a position somewhere next to pretty much any degree. Prospects can explain it surrounded by more depth than me so I shan't just copy them, but own a look here:

http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/showpage/...

On top of this, however, I would add that this is a sale focused environment, with like mad of targets to hit - which can opt a lot of your income. It is relatively high pressure, and requires virtuous communication skills. It has be reported that staff turnover levels can be as elevated as 60% - indicating it really isn't for everyone!

Hi,

To be honest, you are probably not going to find a living working from home. Any opportunities you find that require a start up levy or money up front is a scam don't get sucked surrounded by!!

I encourage you to now put these jobs out of your mind. Here are some of my tips when looking for a position.

Networking - Register at your local Unemployment Office (you don't need to be on severance to register for their assistance). They often will enjoy networking groups on a regular spring. They also are a good source for the job that never show up in the thesis or online.

Check your local paper -- In abundant cases the papers classified are now online.

Search Smart Online -- If you don't own a lot of time, spend most of your time at sites that aggregate the situation feeds from several opportunity search engines. Prominently these include indeed.com and thingamajob.com.

Organization -- I use a free online application that allows you to track your ad, jobs you apply for, distribute or print mail merged correspondence, and track your charge search history. This site is jobsearchlog.com
I invite you to check it out and you'll know how to keep track of what you apply for.

Good Luck,

Karen
Source(s):
Actually, you are right. Someone should never enjoy to pay a levy to get a JOB. Expenses for things resembling transcription equipment may be expected for that type of job if someone doesn't already hold those things, but you are right. No fee should be rewarded for a job. Now agree to me go on, hopefully this will relieve.

There are two different types of work at home income. Work at home JOBS are like telecommuting. You enjoy a boss and guaranteed assignments. You get those done contained by a timely fashion and you've get a paycheck, and you probably don't have to remuneration anything (unless it's something like transcription work and you're paying for your equipment). But your time isn't as flexible next to this type of work. Like I said earlier, in attendance should be no fee for this. Check out wahm.com's telecommuting folder for some legit job. They ARE available.

Then there are work at home BUSINESSES. These usually do require some sort of money from you but this is okay if you are paying for products. Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Avon are some of the ably known one for this type of business. I'm within Watkins (see my profile if you're interested -- it's been around since 1868 and provides the best talent kitchen spices, mixes, etc. in my evaluation!), There are especially fun if you're wanting some type of "hobby" job and want to procure out of the house on occasion. When you interweave one of these companies, you are paying for your business to get started. You can't start a business minus something to sell, objects to provide information, etc. If you are paying for this type of thing it's okay. The amount you retribution depends with respectively company. You should be very sure to know exactly what you are paying for.

Now, I stress that you should NEVER enjoy to pay money for list of "prospects," just for "information," etc. You should single be willing to settle up money to a very reputable company for products. Anything else is a scam.

Now that I've made clear the two different type of work at home opportunity, you've got one of the most meaningful things to figure out: What are your passion, hobbies, etc. What do you naturally delight in doing? Any type of work you do from home needs to be something you won't repugnance. It doesn't matter if your neighbor is truly making a million bucks next to ease near some company, if you don't naturally soak up doing that type of thing, you're going to be lucky to formulate $10. Does this make sense? Think in the region of what you like to do and stir from there. There is something out in that for nearly any type of niche. For example, I love to write so I went into tabloid work and then started to freelance once I quit my livelihood to be home with my children. I also love to cook so Watkins is a great fit for me. Also, I savour helping people so I started doing trellis stuff that provided resources for people (see my profile).

Okay, the ultimate thing: There is one item that you can do that won't cost you anything. G00GLE a.d.sense can be set up for free on a free blog and you can make money doing this. BUT it take time, time, TIME and patience, moderation, PATIENCE and WORK to see significant income this way. It take a while to get the benevolent of traffic you would need to engineer this a reliable source of income.

If you're looking for ideas on legit opportunity, I suggest you check out wahm.com. They have SO much information in attendance. I hope I've been of some give support to! : )
Hope these job websites can relief you.

There are free work at home jobs online. Typically they pay packet you to view advertisement, take surveys, etc.

Once such site is Inbox Dollars. I've written a blog post in the order of getting your first $30 from Inbox Dollars in lower than an hour.

The main problem near finding sites like this that are legit is need to go through adjectives the scam sites. I use Marketing Pond, which is a collection of prescreened sites guaranteed to payout when they say they will. See my Marketing Pond Review for a enumerate of legit programs.

Good luck!

I own been working for a smaller relaxed firm and sort of let myself run. But now I am at an just right weight, and presently my clothes are to big for me. I dont really have the money for that "Park Avenue" look! What do I do very soon that I want to make the Park Avenue money?

Answers:
You can acquire the look of success short spending a fortune. (Thanks to all the discount retailers who trade quality for smaller quantity.) Purchase a suit in a indistinct color, charcoal grey is an excellent choice, it's a color that looks good on everyone. When you're shopping, grasp a portion of the suit material, make a fist while "scrunching" the yard goods, then like greased lightning let budge. How does the fabric look? If it is extremely wrinkled, you can be sure i.e. how it will look while you are wearing it - particularly after sitting down (rayon blends and linen are infamous for wrinkling, year round wools and poly blends wear the best). Look for a neutral shade within a quality textile - that will give a polished, upscale look.
You involve a suit, end of story.
Sex sell. Remember that. Wear something sexy and low cut. Hell, I'd hire you.

Unless you're being interviewed by some monstrous female organization manager who may quality threatened by your hottness.
You have to wear a business suit. If you own a suit that's too big, take it to procure it altered. Your suit does not have to be expensive, it can come from a discount store, it basically has to be standard. Same for shoes (heels). p.s. can be skirt or pant suit. New haircut & manicure, too.
I work for one of the biggest financial institutions and other have to be suited and present myself professionally. However, I can't other always afford thousands of thousands of dollars. I would suggest going to Sears where on earth they have tremendously nice business outfits at affordable pricing.

I hope this helps!
absolutely wear a blazer and a button up crisp whtie or blue shirt. Pair it with pressed slacks or a skirt - they don't hold to be part of equal suit, but should match and/or compliment respectively other. Wear heels and hose. Aside from the outfit, make sure your nail look nice (if you paint, use a pale pink or clear) and brand name sure you are having a moral conservative hair morning. In short, just breed sure you are put together and then hold some confidence - the confidence will help out plentifully!
uh wear something low cut so they don't notice the rest of what you are wearing? :)

or buy a modern suit on a credit card.
success isn't cheap it's an investment.
