Career progress for a chemist?

Question:
I'm a PhD chemist with experience contained by coatings (paints), inks, and colorants, but have become a touch disillusioned with the middle-of-the-road chemical industry. Any thoughts on new things I might try? I delight in being extremely hands-on, both surrounded by the chemistry lab and away from work. I enjoy woodworking and furniture refinishing, as powerfully as pretty much anything having to do next to home repair and improvement (though I'm not at the "contractor" rank.) I'm also very "outdoorsy". What can I do to that incorporates adjectives my interests & experiences? I know I haven't given you much to go on, but I've other been amazed by the answers I've read here within the past, so I'm looking forward to reading what population suggest! Nothing is too crazy! Thanks!

Answers:
It doesn't sound resembling you are tired of being a chemist and I assume that you are making perfect living as one, so I wouldn't advice rocking the boat.

I enjoy seen some mid-career rank professionals started a "second job" in contracting/consulting contained by their field of interests during their downtime from work - which include evenings and most weekends. The second commission didn't feel resembling a great demand because they own real eagerness for it; and sounds like you do as powerfully. Some people even pilfer a bit of step back within their career (lower pay envelope or level) so that their day job do not demand as much time and thus allow them to pursuit their other interests. Some inhabitants even built up sufficient businesses to eventually quit their day employment.

Sounds like you enjoy lots of options whether work beside someone else or starting on your own. Lawn care, construction, volunteer as military camp leader or for Humane Society to build houses etc. As long as you hold the financial security the world is yours to explore.

Here is an article from a recent issue of Money Magazine hope to stimulate some thoughts. http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/mone...

Interview quiz?

Question:
I'm great when it comes to being interviewed. However, I am mortal interviewed for a different position in matching establishment that I currently work for. I have a couple of vacation planned for this year, and the department that I currently work for already knows more or less them. Should I mention this to my interviewer at the interview, or is it best to wait for them to proposition the job to me? which sounds better and more professional?

Answers:
Wait until you are offered the employment before you mention the vacation...1st you don't want to seem presumptuous 2nd you don't want to put yourself out of the running up to that time you are even in the see.

Be professional and say I would love this career by my family and I enjoy these vacations planned...will this be a problem if I adopt the job.
Wait until they hire you. past then it's not relavent.
It is vastly more professional to hang around for them to offer you the work first. By explaining your vacation plans to them in the past the offer, it sounds similar to you want them to make exceptions for you, and that you already know you enjoy the job. Wait until the set aside is made.
Believe me they already know what your vacation plans are, explicitly part of man management. No do not bring it up, verbs only roughly speaking the promotion, Good luck

I call for lend a hand decide (Mature Answers Only Please)18 & Older please?

Question:
Well, My husband and I have be discussing a matter dealing beside me going to school and working. Now, I want to be in motion to school BUT I requirement to work as well. However, my work diary wont allow me to attend school right immediately. So my question is what should I do?? be in motion to school and quit my errand or continue to work until my husband finish arts school in 2008-2009? I've be trying to make this conclusion for about a week because I surface like I can be finish near school by after and start working in my paddock and work towards opening my own business close to I've planned. So ANY ADIVICE would help me right in a minute. Thank You

Answers:
Tough decision, and since solely you know all the details of your vivacity it's hard to insist on but i will try my best.
It seems to me the subject of conservatory is very historic to youso i really feel that doesn`t matter what your final decision here you involve to make sure that you and your husband are on alike page; you ARE going back to institution, the only sound out is when. IF you decide to dawdle until he's finished then you want to make sure you're making the initial steps towards your enrollment when he's finished.
Have both partner at school can be tough and it can put a indisputable strain on your relationship in time, joie de vivre and finances, both the extra costs and one less gross. I'm sure you've thought about that and ultimately , i ponder that should be the decider. If you go fund to school very soon you have to adopt that the next 2 years will be really tough, financially and also on your bridal. IF you do this m,ake sure you really talk something like it together and make sure that you're both prepared to trade name a few sacrifices surrounded by order to generate time for each other.
On the other paw you have goal in duration, opening your own business is a great dream and you should definitle push complicated towards it but maybe nearby is value surrounded by building up your financial resources for the next two year, after going abck tyourself, then when you're done you may be contained by a stronger place to move forward.

Normalluy i'm the sort of person who'll articulate 'do it', 'go for it' but i wonder if now is the time to be a touch patient. .
I would say-so don't quit your job but, focus on preparation for your return to school and concentrate on abiding as much as posssible (maybe a 2 year CD would be a appropriate idea).
don't see this as a time of waiting, but rather an opportunity to actively prepare for your adjectives so that when your husband is done, he can bear the burden of earn while youreturn to school and when you've finished you'll be better set up[ to dive into your business.

basically my thoughts, whtever you decide, well brought-up luck and best wishes

T
You are in like peas in a pod boat as me. I have to work to retribution the bills but want to go to conservatory and do not have the time to sit contained by a classroom setting. I am attending the University of Phonenix Online. It s a fully accredited academy so my degree will be upright anywhere and I can do the work load when I enjoy time. Its great.
I would say evaluate it from a financial perspective. I would unambiguously not go into debt to walk to school very soon if you can go to arts school in a year or two near the money that your husband makes. If you hold the money for your tuition and can afford to quit your job to progress...then I would step now. That route in a year or two you both will be making money beside no debt and can build your wealth together.
I conjecture you should work. The school isn't going anywhere. If you want to work then work, brand money, and when it's time for you to enroll you will be financially secure, and that's especially noteworthy if you plan to start a business. I know it's exciting to fulfill you dream once you have a clear plan on how to trade name it happen, but you don't want to be struggling financially and going to college. It's too stressful.
can you go to college in the evenings? i enjoy been taking a couple classes on saturday and during the week , in that is some sacrifice but you can do it if you want
Apparently, if I understand correctly, your husband is currently going to institution? Is he working as well? I presume you should realistically look at your finances and start from there contained by deciding your lessons. Sure, you could acquire student loans but you have to think twice about purchase too much debt. Have you thought about "on-line" classes? That might be a optimistic medium. At tiniest it will get you started!
what something like taking a course a semester? is that an option for you?
within was a woman at my last employment that was working on her masters point in physics while working full-time AND planning her wedding ceremony, buying a house & somehow didn't lose her mind! it can be done...she was taking courses through University of Phoenix online...is it possible to attain your degree that means of access?

If you receive an internship at an I-bank within NYC, do they support next to housing?

Question:
I am a junior in college hoping to become an financial analyst at one of the top investment bank (Goldman/Merrill). Assuming that I get the internship (summer analyst) for subsequent summer, will they help near housing in NYC? If not will the stipend I fashion be enough to sublet a place?

Answers:
the 'moving allowance' (i come up with that's what they called it) be $4k or $5k.

I went to NYU and I know that some of the larger bank blocked out rooms at some of the downtown NYU dorms. Expect to spend $1,000 to $1,500 per month for a room at one of the NYU dorms (sharing a bedroom with another person)

Could you do better on craigslist? Probably. The upside to the dorms is that you're next to people your age (not that you'll enjoy a life) and that you've got internet, furniture, etc. taken meticulousness of.

How can i find a work? not a soul requests to hire me.?

Question:
ive turned in applications to serveral places. i never get a call stern. this will be my first job. but not a soul seems to want to hire me. on my sallary and hours i put stretch out.

Answers:
I know what you're going through for I am a first-timer as well. The most meaningful thing roughly speaking filling out applications is calling your prospective employer. This shows that you are interested in the position. You filled out the apps right, but it wouldn't hurt to plague them out at the place if possible and turning them surrounded by personally to the controller, telling them that you hope they consider you for the chore.

Be persistent. Call them and ask to speak to the representative, and if they give you a date that they are planning on calling inhabitants who applied, call them on that year to make sure that they consider you (because most promising they may have forgotten you). It's a MAJOR lend a hand if you go to the store and settle with some of the human resources to see what the atmosphere is like: dress (work & interview), tread, how the managers are, etc. If they ask you your given name, let them know or if they don't, put in the picture them anyways. They could mention you to the manager, and that could singular help your probability.

Keep calling and going into the place and talk to the commissioner to check on the status of your app. This will show them you really want the job and they'll start to put you at the top of their list.

BE PERSISTANT.
do you look presentable, do you speak okay, how do you dress. you might need to re-examine yourself
If you haven't, you should appointment back and check on your applications, sometimes you enjoy to be the first one to call
its a state of mind... I found that out...

Just give attention to higher of yourself... and you will grasp hired...

If you are in the US, and looking for an hourly post, then snagajob.com is a moral website... you are almost guaranteed to get a nickname...

sometimes it is best to be patient... it usually take 2-3 weeks after putting in an application since you get your first phone phone call...
Okay... I am going to give you direction I should be taking myself! I, unlike you, have be in the workforce 30+ years and should know what it take (I used to TEACH this crap!)...

First of all - it is rugged for a first-timer to get a living... you've got to start at the bottom usually. and work your track up.

With that in mind, remember you aren't the solely first-timer out there. so what you necessitate to do is call rear legs. Ask to speak to the person who does the hiring (it help if you know their name already)... find out when they are planning on making a decree... then contact them on THAT daylight as well. Keep calling until they bring up to date you they've already filled the position.

Good luck - I know how frozen this is... and I need to budge now and clear a few phone calls. I am facing one and the same problem - only I hold gotten used to a certain remuneration and am finding people want to hire first-timers!
Those are ghastly things to put down for salary and hours. When I did hiring I discounted the applications base on that. I want to know exactly what the employee can and can't work. I want to know what they expect surrounded by terms of stipend, open say...I don't know what I want to make in a minute but a year from now I will be whining for a riase because you hired me so low.

Ask the workers at the store what they were hired at...reflect on of your own expectations and put that down. Don't worry if you are over or below they just want to know what your expectations are. As for hours if you want to show avalability put down the hours the store is unstop. If you are still in academy consider this when you put the hours down. Put down what you will beable to work when in institution, not right now.

PS I hope you are spelling better on applications than you do here...explicitly a big mark down on applications too...
dress more risque, dudes that do the hiring close to bringing around girls they think they could find.

just human character
Be patient...it may nouns corny but "everything in due time" implication the right position is coming...just hold on...

verbs to put in applications, ask your mom or some other fully developed to review your application to make sure you look professional printed...know what I mean...
.where on earth are you applying, you said it was your 1st available job be mindfull of where you put contained by applications places like a edge or example want someone with experience contained by that setting, somewhere like Wetseal within the mall might enunciate yes she's just right...I'm not aphorism don't go for a great livelihood but don't be sad if these prestigious places won't dispense you a chance...
...sometimes you hold to call them final!...you may put in an application but still ring up the place and say, "I would resembling to know the status of my application please" I have done that earlier and been asked to come surrounded by for an interview...KEEP THE FAITH something good for you will come Mama!
Having employed copious first time workers with no experience, my primary consideration have always be dependability. Make sure your prospective employer knows that you are dependable and they can count on you to be on the mission and on time every hours of daylight. After submitting your application, be sure to follow up with the personality who interviewed you. Be persistent. Good luck!

I own a wonderful idea!
Some guidelines.

1)NEVER put open out on anything, it looks like you don't strictness.
2)Before you apply for a job, find out how much it pays. Websites resembling salary.com can impart you a good thought.
3)Follow up. Most cases, you will be the only one who did. Things transpire, btw. One application of mine was buried because the hiring overseer was on his opening out and hid apposite applicants from his employer. They finally found mine a year later.
4)Send a thank-you write down to EVERY SINGLE PERSON you speak to. only 2% of mission applicants send ANY thank-you entry. This is a quick road to stand out in the crowd.
5)Ask for the mission. Oddly enough, most family don't do this either. "Thank you for seeing me Mr. So-and-so, I'd a short time ago like to read aloud that I would REALLY like to work for you"
6)DON'T GIVE UP. I am an Information Technology professional, within the last five years I complete out THOUSANDS of applications. I found the perfect career, but it took persistance.
7)Realize that it's a numbers game. For every 10 job you find, one will be a fit, for every 10 fits, you'll get an interview, for every 10 interviews, you'll return with a job. Yes, that add up to 1000. Chances are, it will be a good deal smaller amount, but don't take any likelihood, keep trying!
8)Remember, it's business, and not personal. Go within with a positive attitude, and verbs to the next one. Keep rules 1 through 7 contained by mind and don't loose heart.

Luxury Fashion retail interview (manager position). How do I pin it?

Question:
I am quite restless, what question can I expect? and what query can I ask? I am 100% sure I can do the job and I'll be pious at it, I just dislike intensely interviews, my mind always shift blank. so I want to be ready for it.

Thank you severely much Guys

Answers:
I like interviews which is strange i know relax and smile and write adjectives your best assets down about yourself and you will touch confidant
Tell them you want the job. Make sure that you know adjectives the up to date fashions. Ask them lots of things. Make sure they know your passion as well. They might ask you lots of question about customer service, especially if it is luxury whim.

Ask them what market they are aiming for i.e. age group, what advertising/marketing they do. Ask them around the company, how long it has be going, prospects etc. Just show a real interest and a devotion in what you do.

I other go into interviews thinking, if I don't win it, it's their loss. Think of it in vocabulary that they have to market the job to you! I other tell prospective employer that I am really interested in the duty at the end of the interview and I hold been told explicitly really good.
Do your research... Check the company on the Net. A manager position will include supervisory experience, I would imagine, Or is this a controller of a section...again do the research on the network pull up anything related to the type of rage the company is involved with etc. Think roughly the skills you would be bringing to the position and how you would benefit the organisation. If you do become nervous within interviews there is nil wrong with have prompt cards to help you. These can be an smooth reference for you..Think give or take a few your past experience so that you own examples i.e when you have trained someone, cashing up, deal with a difficult situation. It is also essential to thin around customer service and how this is important to you... Good Luck and try to use your nerves as a positive

What are some steps to transport surrounded by lay down to seize a better brief?

Question:
I have a bachelors scope in communication/journalism, but i'm not sure if i want to do anything surrounded by that field. I am interested within office, hill or possibly teaching. How do I move ahead? What are some dutiful basic computer programs that everyone uses that I should swot up. I know Word and Power Point, but very little nearly Excel (spreadsheets) and nothing around Quickbooks.

Answers:
I would focus on learning adjectives the Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc). The 2007 version of Office is particularly powerful; especially the Excel and will take time to revise. On your career choice, it would depend on what you really delight in doing. Do you enjoy prior arrangement with different race all the time(banking), or working beside kids (teaching) or with impossible to tell apart group of folks daily (office). Remember that respectively one of these may have the gloomy sides as well ; bank - irate customers because YOU lost their deposit, disrespectful adolescents, or dealing with bureau politics. You should find something that you really love and then it won't give the impression of being like it's a undertaking. As far as getting a start you might try doing some volunteer work (teaching) or taking a part-time commission for the other two. Spend some time there and it will be revealed to you which one is right for you.

What are some devout question to ask during a second interview?

Question:
I have a second interview programmed soon for a supervisory position with a commerce company. I have already met near the operations boss and the second interview will be a group interview with an assortment of supervisors and leads.

Answers:
Describe a typical year. I am really interested in the ...program could you recount me more about it? What is your command style? What are you looking for in a applicant? (Then you match your skills to what they articulate.) Finally ask "what is the next step contained by the hiring process and what is your time-line for filling this position?

Good Luck!
Do some research on the company earlier hand.
Have you asked what sort of likelihood there are for advancement passed the supervisory position?
Have you asked what sort of training is given and would it be ongoing?
Manufacturing could be going to anything so wont go into to much more, but ask something like safety statistics and staff situations, if they dont enjoy enough staff do the society there own to pick up the slack. just broad questions
try dub dropping- ask the interviewers what made "Bob" successful. Chances are they knew/worked with "Bob".

If the company is traded publicly, research the stock. Stats show that human resources leave most of their 401k contained by company stocks. If the stock is doing good, that mechanism the employees are making money, and that puts a smile on everyone's obverse. So bring it up in cool conversation.
