It is flat out insubordination, and quite frankly you didn't hire their mother, so you honestly do not hold to answer anything to her. It is important to other document situations of this nature that you can forward to hr personnel if it escalates. If you enjoy any witnesses of such instances I would get their statement as in good health. I would sit her down, pull out her available job description, a copy of employee policies from your policy and procedure brochure, and make sure she understand expectations, and what is considered unacceptable behavior. If this is re-occuring, she is obviously not someone you want on your squad, and I would take adjectives of the necessary steps to ensure she is tolerate go by route of her breaking P&P.

You be right, if it is a justifiable casing of insubordination. There are two reasons to coach someone, 1) A Motivational Issue or 2) A Skill Issue. Skill issues should be tolerated until it reach stagnation. Motivational issues should be tolerated long enough to fix or replace the insubordinate member of staff. Replacement can be costly, but sometimes it is necessary, especially beside someone who doesn't want to perform duties the position call for. Note if it is an ongoing problem than the attitude could be attributed to the work atmosphere or the hiring manager as defy to the employee. Before anything net sure you get the side of hand because it could just be a discouraging time in their vivacity. If so than care roughly them as a person and not a profit, it'll payment off. Don't every lower than estimate the power of love, it is the greatest motivator.
