It is the prerogative of an employer to refuse employment base upon the existence of such a conviction. The only requirement of employer in such a situation is that they treat adjectives equally. In other words, they can't hire another with a similar conviction while denying you, assuming other issues are equal. To do so would risk contravention of fair employment requirements.
