If you are trying to do a body of work, you can try doing a matter. Sometimes a theme can be base only on something as simple as a unify color or unifying size of canvas/paper/frame.

For a painter it might take years for you to see that style surrounded by your own work, don't strive to create an artificial style unless you are a commercial artist.
I think your circumstance selling art might be a block for you. Selling/packaging art for a market is closely different than creating it. To really create, really let stir, you can't be at all concerned next to the bottom line of sale. Often what you like the best is the closing to sell while the one you feel is crap is the first one out the door.
