Washington State Patrol runs the crime labs here within Washington. The scientists there are not crime scene investigators, per se, but they do do some on-scene stuff at times. Mainly they are contained by the lab and all of them hold at minimum a BS, usually in chemistry but they will hold you with another complex science background as long as you own a heavy inflection on chem.
My sister works for a local police department and they have force who do on-scene collection, but it's mainly purely "bagging and tagging" and no laboratory analysis (that stuff is forwarded to the crime lab.) She have a BA in Criminal Justice and is simply biding her time until one of the crime scene techs retires so she can step into that position.
So... it depends largely on whether you are interested in evidence collection at crime scene or doing the scientific analysis contained by the laboratory. And it also depends on how the crime lab system is structured in your jurisdiction; some may own a more "CSI-like" setup with race who do more of both.
They do it at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, but I dont know where on earth you are from!
