The U.S. government would shut down most of Microsoft for monopoly laws. But the deal would never be approved by the federal trade commission to begin with.

Microsoft Corporation, owns a lot of Apple Stock.
Apple Corporation, also owns a lot of MicroSoft stock.
Or so I hear.
It is my understanding, that the proprietary rights for Apples GUI, are licensed to Microsoft, for their GUI Operating Environments, Windows and Vista, and Microsoft has to pay a royalty fee to Apple for each copy of Windows and Vista that they sell, so owning each other's stock seems to be a nice way to balance out the costs.
