Answers: For statistical purposes, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor classifies all U.S. workplace establishments into ten "industries":
o Construction
o Education and condition services
o Financial activities
o Information
o Leisure and hospitality
o Manufacturing
o Natural resources and mining
o Other services (except Public Administration)
o Professional and business services
o Trade, Transportation, and Utilities
Some scientific firms -- those that manufacture equipment -- are classified as Manufacturing.
But others -- e.g., engineering firms, consulting firms, software, etc. -- do not produce anything. They also do not fit into classifications such as financial activities, entertaining, mining, etc., and are classified as being factor of the Service sector.
