For food, I find there's a sanctuary factor. Yes, you can eat the food, but the store's probably imply that they can't be held responsible if you ate chunky milk and got sick. Or if you kept some emergency batteries for 20 years and they didn't work when you needed them, and that cause damages somehow, they probably dont' want to take that blame. So the aspect tests just give a all right indication that those things don't last forever.
I awareness that it's more common to see "Best Before" date, rather than expiry date. I don't really see a better alternative to providing a general indication of when a food might not be secure to eat.

Opportunities
Further expand it's food fragment into stand alone supermarkets (they are already doing this on a small basis) competing with Waitrose and other chains at the percieved "luxury" shutting of the market.
Continue to expand M&S branded catalogue, maybe into other consumable household products in some way food related.
Maybe expand into the express food retailing market (i.e. competing beside companies like Greggs etc.)
Licencing/Export/Franchising the brand to other niche retailers (a la Harrods). This could increase the perception of M&S as a luxury brand.
Threats
No eventual introduction of external brands - ancestors are brand loyal for many products.
No postponed opening hours to compete next to other supermarkets.
