And then in that is the customer service issue. It is generally easier to find an associate at Lowe's than at HD.
They both fetch pretty much the same queue of products, but I find a better quality of lumber products (particularly within the smaller cuts - 2x4 - 2x6 - fence pickets for instance) at Lowe's.

Lots of companies do this--- look at Microsoft; they're now venture into security products even though that's never be their ballpark, not because Windows is going anywhere, just because it's another opportunity to build business.
