As in good health, all companies are contained by their business to make money. In the skin of a large grease corporation, they are in the business of making money for their thousands of share holders.
On top of an grease company making money on their product, Americans have made their product into a neccesity of energy. We are lucky we don't pay $5 or even $10 a gallon of gas. They know we want it, yet their "gouging" have only be to increase the price of something with an infinite constraint a few percent, which in piece is due to the increased price of oil from overseas.
