the biggest one is the federal reserve rate. this simply determines what the interest rate is going to be. a high interest rate usually slows down the housing souk. another one is consumer confidence. if people be aware of good around their jobs and the reduction, they are much more likely to buy a house.
one that I can conjecture of is hit your local (city/county) government to see if the number of building permit (for new houses) have increased or decreased contained by the past couple of months.
Permit issues have ~ a 9 month lead as an indicator for housing.
I'm not sure if how much info they'd be likely to give up, but check your local Home Depot, Lowes or other Home Improvement store. If they are selling lots of Pre-fabed trusses (the roofing frames) next that is going to be a more instantaneous indicator (2-3 month lead within in the housing market).
