From my personal experience, I do not think Microsoft is a monopoly. The source being that as long as Linux is available and the Mac continues to create havoc within the market place, at hand is competition in the flea market place. Also, Microsoft has several flaws, however, the programmers would rather work for Microsoft, than travel out and create their own version of DOS. And for those that do try, don't try for long, because as soon as Microsoft catch wind of their developing, they are a smart satisfactory business to offer them ridiculous amounts of money to stamp out them from the picture.
An example. Yahoo had the fitness to buy G00GLE for one million dollars at the early stages of its nouns. Had Yahoo bought G00GLE, things would be a lot different contained by the Bay Area (headquarters). But, they didn't and G00GLE took the offer sour the table, and the rest is history.
