My personal choice is to participate just in trustworthy things -- IE company charities. I believe in the work the charities my company sponsors, so I don't touch like I'm compromising myself by participating. I do something I delight in, and it looks good to direction. If there's a promotion I want, I go right to the coordinator in charge and speak "What do I need to do to be considered for this position?" But on the daylight to day games and positioning, I stay out of it as much as I can.
