If I have a Macy's Visa but only use it in Macy's stores, will they downgrade it to a Macy's retail card?

Answers: First off, Fahim Knightz is incorrect. The Macy's Visa cards are handled by Macy's regardless whether it's the Visa or Macy's portion of the account. They handle all the customer service issues and yes, you can pay on the Visa account at the store. He is correct though about it being two seperate lines of credit, and will show as such on your credit report.

While I worked for Macy's Credit Customer Service, the only time I recall seeing a Visa account closed due to inactivity was an instance where the Visa portion was never used and after 2 or 3 years they closed the Visa and sent a regular store card.

So in short, the answer to your question is yes, it can happen, but it's not very likely.
no, they typically wont downgrade you because you are keeping the card active

they created those Visa cards to 'tempt' their customers to spend more money in other places

but you'll be fine using it in Macy's store only

How many points does a regular inquiry take off your credit score?

Answers: Inquiries usually have a small impact. For most people, one additional credit inquiry will take less than five points off their FICO® score. However, inquiries can have a greater impact if you have few accounts or a short credit history. Large numbers of inquiries also mean greater risk: People with six
inquiries or more on their credit reports can be up to eight times more likely to declare bankruptcy than people with no inquiries on their reports.
■ Many kinds of inquiries are ignored ompletely.YourFICO® score does not count an inquiry when you order your credit report or credit score from a credit reporting agency or from another company that provides this information to consumers. Also, the FICO® score does not count inquiries a lender has made for your credit report or score in order to
make you a “pre-approved” credit offer, or to review
your account with them, even though you may see these inquiries on your credit report. Inquiries that are marked as coming from employers are not counted either.
An inquiry can take anywhere from 1-3 points off of your score on average.
