Stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.. use Household Finance, which is usually pretty leniant. Not sure what you mean by "Fair' credit, but my guestimation is that you MAY get approved at Sears, or Penney's.

Does searching for the best proffer further reduce it?

Answers: Depends.

If you check your own gain or one of your credit card companies checks to see if they want to increase your line of credit or they check to see if they want to propose you a card it's a soft pull and no points are taken past its sell-by date.

If you apply for a home or auto loan all made inwardly a 14-day period are lumped together and just count as one, they all show but your rack up only take one hit.

If you apply for lots of credit cards on the other hand they adjectives count and each one will cost you anywhere from 3-5 points depending on the depth of your credit record.
If you're checking your own score, no points are taken stale.
