Your first poster is right, http://www.annualcreditreport.com give you one free credit report a year for free from each of the three, including Experian. I know because I have to get mine second night and I don't enjoy any way of paying for one so I found this site.

You should be much more worried about giving your ssn over the Internet. Look contained by the phone book for Credit bureau and go nearby you will have to hand over them the info but they use a secure system to check your history.
