Bills gone into collections and how it affects you credit?

i had 2 medical bills that go into collection. i've already paid those. i also have 2 medical bills that almost went into collection. i'm currently paying on those. how doomed to failure will these affect my credit?

I know I'm not supposed to close a credit card, but the annual excise is a problem, what do i do?
