I know, it sounds like a silly interrogate but here's the deal. I am a minor and I go to the bank to set up a checking commentary. The guy told me that since I am not 18 I could only win a ATM card, which I assumed would only allow me to gain money out of a machine or at some grocerie stores or something. So my card comes contained by the mail today and it is a Master Card Debit Card. Does this expect the guy was inncorect and I in actual fact did get a Debit card that I can use at most stores and ATM machines? It's a WaMU Gold Debit Card. I ponder I am correct but I would like to know past go look foolish contained by a store.
Answers: First of all, grats on your first card, ATM or not, its a great instrument to practice watching how much you spend, and getting you ready for the inevitable credit card surrounded by a few years.
I myself have used Wamu for a few years presently, ATM cards are really the training wheels of Debit cards, ( Which, surrounded by turn are the training wheels for CREDIT cards. ) Here is the MAJOR difference:
ATM Cards are essentially paper dosh turned to plastic, without money surrounded by the bank, its worthless. You can use it at most retail stores, especially if it have a Visa or Mastercard Logo. ( Although WaMus ATM cards do not if I remember right... ) Anyways, they should still work, but remember, don't get mortified and lose track of how much you have within your account. There is nought worse than trying to buy something with a card that get declined.
Debit Cards: Pretty much indistinguishable deal, but they are more widely official due to two reasons: A) They own a Visa or Mastercard logo, and B) They LET you make mistakes. They will usually allow you to overdraft your vindication to a degree, almost similar to an absolute emergency loan ( VERY expensive , around $35 bucks for a max $200 Overdraft ) Although I REALLY don't recommend it, it CAN come in handy contained by a crisis. Besides, it teaches you to recompense more attention to your cash.
Now both ATM cards and Debit Cards enjoy one thing within common, they pinch money directly out of your bank sketch. ( Checking ) Although Debit cards can take some time to show within your ATM statement, so try to keep track of your money yourself. There is as expected, one more card, that allows for adjectives the freedom you could ask for, and the penalties that might craft you wet your pant if you abuse it.
The Credit card.
The Credit card, close to the debit card, can be used at pretty much any Retail store, however, a credit card is given to customers, ( Thats you ) with a credit control ( How much you can spend before the card stops you ) Based on your credit rack up. ( Remember, you dont start building credit until you are 18, having no credit is worse than have bad credit, so it might be a year or two formerly you can even apply for a credit card )
These cards allow you to spend money you may or may not have available, that you can pay packet off by the expire of the month in full,( Recommended ) Or pay packet in monthly installments, ( Generally near a relatively high interest rate )
Generally, the switch attitude is this: don't spend what you don't have, or what you cannot compensate off by a credit cards due date.
* Sigh *
ANYWHO
Yes you can use an ATM store similar to a Debit card, just don't try to spend more than you hold, because unlike a Debit card, it will stop you.
Edit: One final tip, Wamu will ask you to create a pin number, when you make a purchase, the banker may ask if the card is debit or credit, ( Although if they have more than 6 brain cell they should be able to explain to ) Just tell them its Debit, Because ATM cards run rotten the Debit system :)
Yes a ATM card is a debit card. It's saying you can use it at a store. There are some small merchants who don't own the ability to clear the approval of debit card payments because they don't take a fix credit line. Usually stores that don't adopt checks won't accept debit cards. Today it's unlikely to shop at one anyway. But, if your driving across country and run out of gas by a small town gas station, they could put in the picture you to go to the ATM first. Sounds similar to it's a debit card that you can use to make purchases. Does it hold a strip on the back for you to sign? Are nearby numbers on it and an expiration date? If so, you have a debit card, not newly an ATM card.
yes it is a debit card and u can use for making purchases
