Laura, there are solid jobs race do at home, but they're not the ones advertised online. Most of them are done any on a contract basis (my husband's company hires empire to research and write legal articles, for instance) or are someone whose employment could be done anywhere who requests home work.
I know several people who do contract writing, but with the sole purpose because of my husband's work, one person who's a medical indexer (whatever that is) at home, and two who do transcription at home, one medical and one officially recognized.
Going out and finding a job to work at home is impressively difficult. All the people I know who do it started out working at the company and didn't start working at home until they'd be there for several years.
