Since stocks are so volatile, what would be a virtuous channel to invest your money right immediately?

Answers:    It depends on how much and when you need the money.

Just because stocks are volatile shouldn't fashion you stop investing in them if for long permanent status. The stock market have always out perform other markets. I plow into my 401k which is hefty into stocks no matter what the marketplace is like.

If for short permanent status and you need the money next I suggest CD's 6months to 12 months. With our economy the route it is, you never know when you'll need the money. Also, CD's have higher APY's than Money Market Accounts.

Now, if you enjoy a lot of money, within excess of $50,000.00 or much more, then this is the best time to take into real estate. Home values hold dropped significantly but will go rear in a couple of years. You're almost trustworthy to get a steal. Look into physical estate in Florida...
I hope this help, but you have to be for a while more specific on what you have and your current situation (age, income, retirement desires and so on)
