In real souk is it possible to have short position or long position on a marketplace index for example S&P500?

There are three ways to have a long or short position.

(1) As already mentioned, by buying or shorting an ETF that simulates the index.

(2) By buying or selling futures on the index.

(3) By buying or writing option on the index.

Answers: Check the volume. It is probably terrifically low.

In after hours trading it is typically traders trying to buy or sell at an exceptionally well-mannered price.
