Why is British Pound going down ?
against Euro, Swiss Frank, even Polish zloty ...GBP is reaching 5 year low now - why ? what is the outlook?
Answers: There are a gamut off factor at work in the tip out of the Pound. It is probably not over yet, every report I enjoy read states that the Pound will continue to dribble for 12 to 18 months. The outlook is very hugely poor.
The UK government have been running a intensely large budget defecit for several years in a minute. The market is convinced we are slipping into a recession. The traditional response from government is to increase spending to stimulate demand. The UK is already a massively high rates country, the government will find it almost impossible to borrow more or bump up taxes. Hence they can't increase spending significantly, hence the market believes the UK is heading for a substained recession and ecomonic pursuit and the demand for Pounds will sink.
In the meantime the Bank Of England is lowering interest rates, which removes another common sense to hold Pounds.
There is an element of flock mentality here. The US Dollar has be the whipping boy on the currency markets for a while very soon, what you're seeing is the market moving on to a untried target. The pound is over valued right now, and is predictable to over shoot on the downside before it stabilises. It used to be supported by the grease price, but UK oil production have been falling so fast that the support from the oil price have pretty much dropped away.
The picture could look completely different this time next year (depending on how long and weighty the recession is) but personally I'm not buying more pounds for at lowest possible 12 months.
Expectation that the Bank of England will imminently annouce an interest rate cut following the fed cut within the US. Interest rates are inherently linked to exchange rates, hence the impact
Is it ok to refinance now a days when interest is low 5.25%?
Answers: 5.25 is a great rate. It is possible the rates may fall more, but I doubt they will go much lower. If you are considering refinancing, this is a good time for it.
